Ayurvedic Spa treatments are known around the globe not only for their soothing and relaxing properties, but for their health benefits as well.  Shirodhara is one of the most popular, and my favorite, of all the spa treatments we offer at Tulsi Spa.  Shirodhara is known as an Ayurvedic Bliss Therapy. The word Shirodhara comes from the Sanskrit work “Shiro” meaning head, and “Dhara” meaning flow.  In this technique, flowing liquid is gently poured over the forehead.  Traditionally, a person lies down, and a metal pot is hung over the person’s head.  From this pot warm oil or liquid streams onto the forehead.

Shirodhara is also known as the Third Eye Treatment because the third eye is located in the forehead, just above and between the eyebrows over which the liquid is poured.  There is another container below the head to catch all the liquid as it flows off the body.

Oil is the most common liquid that is used in the Shirodhara treatment, and other liquids that are often used are herbalized oils, buttermilk, coconut water, or plain water.

Shirodhara is incredibly relaxing – it can send a person into a deep state of meditation.  Shirodhara also helps to remove toxins, or “ama” from the body, and it helps to calm the mind, stabilize the nervous system and bring about positive emotions.  The technique also helps nutrients within the body to flow freely to the brain, encouraging healing from within.  Shirodhara has been known to help with problems such as insomnia, headache, lack of focused attention, and so much more. I have found that a Shirodhara treatment is the best treatment for stress and anxiety.
